THERESA MAY - MP for Maindenhead - The Prime Minister reshuffled her cabinet following the resignations of International Development Secretary Priti Patel and Defence Minister Sir Michael Fallon.

Mrs May remained prime minister despite losing her majority in the 8 June general election, which she had called seeking a mandate for Brexit. She became the UK's second female prime minister in 2016 following Maggie Thatcher, after David Cameron resigned in the wake of the EU referendum result. She had previously been home secretary for six years.

THE GUARDIAN THURSDAY 11 JANUARY 2018 - Theresa May has said her government is serious about improving the environment after pressure groups gave a lukewarm response to a 25-year green plan, praising its ambition but warning that it lacked sufficient proposals for immediate action. May’s proposals were also criticised by Jeremy Corbyn, who said her pledge to stop all avoidable plastic waste by 2042 was “far too long” to take action - and that may prove to be the case, but let us give her the benefit of the doubt for a while so that we can see some action, or not. What that could mean is that they want to appease the electorate and pass the problem onto the next generation - but - the whole point of taking action now is to try and stop the fish that we eat, eating the plastic in Marine Litter.

The use of words is typically "careful" Conservative speak, loaded with gray areas. Those caveats aside, one has to applaud the clear intention to respond to public outcry at the plight of our marine life. The opposition are rightly critical of the timescale, where we should have been doing something about this sooner. The Global Ocean Commission knew about this problem two years ago and came to the conclusion that not much could be done about it because of the scale of the problem. Maybe Britain should light a path that (hopefully) the rest of the world - and especially the developing world - will heed and emulate. Europe is already setting the pace with the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund putting out a call last year.

At the moment the UK is deeply in debt with other serious societal issues that Teresa's Government is having difficulty with, such as the lack of affordable housing and the need to import cheap labour to keep our economy afloat when the present (buy to let) economic' policies do not appear to be equitable - hence are unsustainable. The problem being that successive Labour and Conservative governments have sold us into slavery trying to keep their election promises - while the electorate blinked - or is that: were hoodwinked. The election promises were not possible without borrowing, and borrowing, and borrowing.

We wonder then how the Conservatives hope to dig us out of this mess, the result of what appears to be years of mismanagement at the top based on continuous borrowing, that any economist should have known would end in tears. No doubt they will borrow some more to mask their failures - unless there is a change of heart.

Who then is ultimately responsible. It is Her Majesty the Queen of England as the Head of State? Or is it the electorate for being so stupid as to vote for Labour and Conservative parties year after year. Or, is it the fault of the party/parties that made election promises that they knew deep down that they could never keep. Naughty! but one of the first requirements for any would be politician is the ability to be economical with the details convincingly.

Prime Minister Theresa May named Gavin Williamson as the new Defence Secretary following Sir Michael Fallon’s resignation.

Mr Williamson is the MP for South Staffordshire, having served the constituency since the 2010 election. Theresa May appointed him Chief Whip following her victory in the Conservative leadership election. He had previously served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Northern Ireland; the Secretary of State for Transport; and also to former Prime Minister, David Cameron.

Have either the UK warmongers or NATO chiefs looked hard at how to curb their carbon output? Do they even care? By contrast John Kerry, former US Defence Secretary has looked at ways to reduce American energy use for their armed forces.

We think it is shameful that the defence budget for 2016 was £35.3 billion pounds when there are homeless on the streets. That makes the United Kingdom the fifth largest spendthrifts on defence in the world - when there are far more important things to think about than strutting about on the world stage pretending that we still have an Empire. We wonder how a country the size of the UK, with only 66 million people can afford such expenditure, that looks to be around five times the amount per person as compared to other countries. What happened to the Circular Economy, or does that not apply when it comes to the boys from BAE Systems?

THERESA MAY OR MAY NOT - According to numerous media article the Prime Minister is finding it difficult to concentrate on the main issues with so many pundits chirping up. If we are going to leave Europe, then we'd urge the Prime Minister to work from a tick list and agree one point after the other to achieve the most satisfactory outcome - not only for the United Kingdom - but also for our bedfellows in Europe, who after all are our neighbours that we must work with to defeat common perils such as climate change and ocean pollution.

It is true and we must face facts, that Britain is not as Great as it once was on the world stage. There are other super-powers now, but that is not the point. No matter how big or small a country may be, we can all play our part when it comes to a Circular Economy internationally. Europe will appreciate this with their Commissioners coming out strongly in favour of climate and pollution controls. It is not just about the money, important though financial (home) security is, food and energy security are more important. Europe in not about to let the UK starve when this country has so much to offer - once we stop fighting each other. It is the politicians who are opening old wounds long healed, in their muck-raking efforts to reverse the poll - unfortunate that the result may have been.

DAILY MAIL 5-2-18 - LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE DISMISSED: JACOB REES-MOOG

Jacob Rees-Mogg dismissed the prospect of becoming Prime Minister today - saying he has too many children to do the job.

The MP, who has become a darling of the Tory grassroots for his old-fashioned style and traditional right-wing views, said taking charge of No10 would be 'very difficult' because he is a 'family man'.

The comments came as the politician backed Theresa May to stay in the top job - but admitted she does not look like she is enjoying it.

Mr Rees-Mogg has become the bookies' favourite to succeed Mrs May as Conservative leader.

But answering questions from postgraduate journalism diploma students at the Press Association offices in central London, he said he did not want to be PM.

'I think want is very much the wrong word,' he said.

'If you look at Mrs May, it seems to be quite clear she does it because it's her duty to do it, I don't get the impression that it's a lot of fun for her - it's hard work.

'I've got six children, it would be very, very difficult as a family man so want is not the right word, I'm very happy as a backbencher and what I do want is Mrs May to stay Prime Minister.'

Mr Rees-Mogg is a devout catholic. Last summer he announced the arrival of his sixth child with wife Helena - named Sixtus Dominic Boniface Christopher.

The other children's full names are Alfred Wulfric Leyson Pius, Thomas Wentworth Somerset Dunstan, Peter Theodore Alphege, Anselm Charles Fitzwilliam and Mary Anne Charlotte Emma Rees-Mogg.

Despite having so many children, Mr Rees-Mogg has previously revealed that he has never changed a nappy.

Those duties are apparently shouldered by a nanny who has worked for the Rees-Mogg family for more than five decades.

Despite Mr Rees-Mogg's endorsement of the PM, he did not completely rule out standing as leader in the future.

He also criticised the Tories' election campaign, which last June left the party without a House of Commons majority.

'We should have a more optimistic vision, what we had to say at the last election was so gloomy,' he said.

'It was that we will manage things better than the other side will, but it is going to be really nasty, we're going to make you sell your house if you're elderly and if you're young we're not going to talk to you at all.

'That doesn't work, it was a bad idea.

'Where I think Jeremy Corbyn is doing well is in showing a vision for what he believes in and I think Conservatives have to do this.'

Mr Rees-Mogg also praised the 'bravery' of I'm A Celebrity winner Georgia 'Toff' Toffolo for publicly backing the Tories, and said it was important for the party to show it has young and famous supporters.

'It's very important the Conservative Party can show that it's got followers from a variety of areas,' the MP said.

'We broadly expect that retired field marshals will be Conservative but we need to show that young people, celebrities, people that can win I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, also have a connection with the Conservative Party, that they see why it's attractive.

'And I think her role is important in showing that there are some young Conservative as well and she's brave in putting her head above the parapet because very few celebrities are willing to say they are Conservative.'
